The Zytglogge, a Romanesque tower of Bernese sandstone rising 54.5 metres above the medieval streets of Bern, was built in the early 13th century as a guard tower and gate to the city. Over eight centuries, it has evolved into a multifunctional civic landmark, serving variously as a prison, clock tower, and centre of urban life. The tower's most celebrated feature is its 15th-century astronomical clock, which draws visitors from around the world. Despite centuries of renovation and redecoration, the Zytglogge remains one of Bern's most recognisable symbols and the city's oldest monument. As a class A Swiss cultural property of national significance and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Old City of Bern, it stands as a testament to the city's medieval heritage and enduring civic identity.
