Located on the University of Toronto's St. George campus, 88 College Street is a Gothic Revival structure completed in 1882 by the architectural firm Smith and Gemmell. The building served dual functions as both a church and university building, embodying the medieval architectural vocabulary characteristic of the Gothic Revival movement popular in late-nineteenth-century Canada. Its Gothic detailing reflects the stylistic preferences of institutional architecture during this period, when universities and religious institutions alike embraced pointed arches and ornamental stone work to evoke historical grandeur and academic tradition.
