Located at 240 South Broad Street in Philadelphia, the Academy of Music is a Renaissance Revival opera house and concert hall designed by Napoleon LeBrun and built between 1855 and 1857. The oldest opera house in the United States still in active use for its original purpose, it has earned the affectionate nickname "Grand Old Lady of Locust Street." The venue serves as home to both the Philadelphia Ballet and Opera Philadelphia, and from its founding in 1900 until 2001 housed the Philadelphia Orchestra before that ensemble relocated to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, the Academy remains a vital cultural institution on Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts.
