The Ali Pasha Mosque stands in Ohrid's Old Bazaar as the principal mosque of the city and seat of its muftiate. Built in 1573 in Ottoman architectural style, it was renovated by the vizier Ali Pasha of Yanina and renamed in his honour in 1823. The 17th-century traveller Evliya Çelebi recorded that the mosque originally possessed two minarets, though only one survives in photographs; the second was reduced to a 6.5-metre stub by the 1910s. Following a 2015 agreement between Turkey and North Macedonia's Islamic Union, the mosque underwent renovation, including an extension of its remaining minaret to 32 metres, completed in November 2019. The project drew local debate in the predominantly Christian city. Today the mosque remains a heritage site in North Macedonia.
