Located at 86 Trinity Place in Lower Manhattan's Financial District, the American Stock Exchange Building comprises two distinct structures that chronicle the evolution of American securities trading. The original 1921 section, designed by Starrett & van Vleck and facing Greenwich Street, employs Renaissance Revival style with expansive arched windows that once illuminated the trading floor—a facility that elevated the status of the New York Curb Exchange, which had previously conducted business outdoors on the street. The building's eastern expansion, completed between 1929 and 1931 in response to increased trading volume, rises fourteen stories in Art Deco style, featuring an ornate facade with a central entrance and relief sculptures emblematic of the exchange's commercial purpose. After the New York Curb Exchange was renamed the American Stock Exchange in 1953, the building served as its headquarters until the company's 2008 merger with the New York Stock Exchange. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978 and a New York City Landmark in 2012, the structure stands as a testament to the institutional history of American finance.
