Are Castle is a ruined hill castle perched 240 metres above the village of Altenahr in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Built around 1100 by Count Dietrich I of Are, it was first recorded in historical documents in 1121. Today a designated architectural heritage monument, the castle remains a landmark of the region's medieval aristocratic past; its name lives on through the Are Gymnasium, a local grammar school in nearby Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler that has borne the castle's name since 1965.
