Maus Castle, a medieval fortress built in 1353, stands on the east bank of the Rhine above the village of Wellmich in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Its name—meaning "Mouse Castle" in German—contrasts with the nearby Katz Castle (Cat Castle) to the south in Sankt Goarshausen, while Rheinfels Castle rises across the river at Sankt Goar. Now a protected cultural monument, the castle survives as a ruin that testifies to the region's complex medieval fortification strategy along one of Europe's most storied river valleys.
