Balboa Park station is a BART and Muni Metro complex in the Mission Terrace neighborhood of San Francisco, serving four BART routes and three Muni Metro lines alongside numerous bus routes. Located on the former right-of-way of the Southern Pacific Railroad's Ocean View Branch, the station opened on November 5, 1973, as part of San Francisco's BART expansion. The complex includes a below-grade BART island platform and surface-level Muni platforms serving the Cameron Beach Yard and Green Light Rail Center, where the transit authority maintains both Muni Metro trains and heritage streetcars. The site preserves significant early-twentieth-century railway heritage: a 1901 office building designed by Reid & Reid in the Queen Anne style, originally built by the San Francisco and San Mateo Electric Railway, and an adjacent 1907 powerhouse from the United Railroads conglomerate. Both historic structures, damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Recent improvements to the station include a new BART entrance (2011), modernized Muni platforms (2015–2017), and an additional footbridge (2018).
