Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre historic urban cultural park in San Diego, California, whose site was placed in reserve in 1835, making it one of the oldest areas in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. Developed by Katherine Olivia Sessions, the park showcases Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, particularly from two major expositions: the Panama–California Exposition of 1915–16 and the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935–36, both of which left enduring architectural landmarks within its grounds. Today the park houses museums, theaters, restaurants, and the San Diego Zoo, managed by the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department. In 1977, Balboa Park and its historic exposition buildings were designated a National Historic Landmark and National Historic Landmark District, and were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
