The Panama–California Exposition was a world's fair held in San Diego's Balboa Park from January 1, 1915, to January 1, 1917, designed to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and promote San Diego as the first major American Pacific port for vessels traveling north from the canal. The exposition's architecture drew on Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles, creating a cohesive visual identity across the fairgrounds. The fair proved significant enough that the same venue hosted a second Panama–California Exposition in 1935.
