The San Diego County Administration Center, a Beaux-Arts and Spanish Revival structure completed in 1938, stands as a landmark civic building fronting San Diego Bay and housing the county government offices. Designed by Samuel Wood Hamill, William Templeton Johnson, Richard Requa, and Louis John Gill, the building was largely funded by the Works Progress Administration. Its innovative earthquake-resistant construction techniques made it a prototype of American civic center architecture. Nicknamed the Jewel on the Bay for its notable architecture and prominent waterfront location, the center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
