Frank Lloyd Wright's final major architectural commission, the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, California, represents a sprawling modernist complex completed in phases after the architect's death. Groundbreaking for the Administration Building occurred in 1960 under Wright's protégé Aaron Green, who oversaw its 1962 completion, followed by the Hall of Justice (1966–1969), Veterans Memorial Auditorium (1971), and Exhibit Hall (1976). Stretched across two valleys east of US 101, the complex is distinguished by pink stucco walls, a blue roof, and scalloped balconies. The smaller administration wing and larger Hall of Justice are connected by a round structure housing a Marin County Free Library branch. The project's realization involved considerable political contention among county supervisors regarding site selection, architect choice, and financing. Now recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Civic Center stands as a significant expression of Wright's organic architecture principles applied to civic purpose.
