The Santa Barbara County Courthouse, begun in 1926 and completed in 1929, stands as a landmark example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in Santa Barbara, California. Originally designed to house the county's superior courthouse, jail, and administrative offices, the building has evolved over decades into primarily a judicial facility, now containing six Superior Court rooms, the County Hall of Records, the Public Defender's Office, and the McMahon Law Library. Architect Charles Willard Moore called it the "grandest Spanish Colonial Revival structure ever built" and the prime example of Santa Barbara's adoption of Spanish Colonial as its civic style. The building has been recognized with multiple designations: listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1981), designated a City of Santa Barbara Historic Landmark (1982), a California Historical Landmark (2004), and a National Historic Landmark (2005). Today it remains open to the public and serves as a popular venue for community gatherings and weddings.
