The Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy, is a sixth-century church completed around 550 and stands as one of the most significant surviving monuments of early Byzantine architecture. Though designated a basilica for its historic and ecclesial importance within the Roman Catholic Church, its centrally-planned design departs from the typical basilica form. The church is renowned above all for its magnificent mosaics, among the most-studied works in Byzantine art, which exemplify the visual sophistication of late antique religious practice. As one of eight UNESCO World Heritage structures in Ravenna, San Vitale represents both a masterpiece of Byzantine artistic achievement and a key document of early medieval Christian culture.
