The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, located in Ravenna, Italy, is a Byzantine-era church consecrated in 549 and dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, the first bishop of Ravenna and Classe. An outstanding monument of late Ancient Roman and early Christian architecture, it exemplifies the purity and simplicity of early basilica design while displaying sumptuous decorative elements. Originally built around 550, the basilica now functions as both a minor basilica and an Italian national museum housing a religious collection. In 1996, it was inscribed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside seven other nearby monuments, recognized for its architectural significance as a seminal example of early Christian sacred space.
