The Basilica of Saint Martin in Tours, France, was built over the tomb of Saint Martin of Tours, whose original 5th-century basilica (consecrated in 471) once served as the spiritual center of a monastic community that counted the renowned scholar Alcuin among its abbots during the reign of Charlemagne. The medieval structure was destroyed during the French Revolution. The present basilica, constructed between 1886 and 1924 by French architect Victor Laloux, rises in a Neo-Byzantine style on part of the original site, which the Church had reclaimed. Dedicated on 4 July 1925, it stands as a monument historique inscrit and represents a grand 19th-century revival of the sacred space that had anchored Christian life in the Loire Valley for over a millennium.
