The Miami Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables is a luxury hotel built in 1926 by architects Schultze and Weaver in the Mission Revival style. Designed by John McEntee Bowman and George Merrick as part of the Biltmore hotel chain, the property features a distinctive tower inspired by the Giralda, the medieval bell tower of Seville's cathedral. Upon completion, its 315-foot height made it Florida's tallest building—a distinction it held until 1928. The hotel once boasted the world's largest swimming pool, where Johnny Weissmuller worked as a swimming instructor before his career as the film actor Tarzan. During World War II, the building served as a hospital, and later housed a Veterans Administration Hospital and the University of Miami medical school until 1968. After years of abandonment, it resumed hotel operations in 1987 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
