Bran Castle, situated 25 kilometres southwest of Brașov in Transylvania, Romania, is a Gothic Revival fortress built by Saxons in 1377 under a privilege granted by Louis I of Hungary. Positioned on the Transylvanian side of the historical border with Wallachia, the castle now serves as a national monument and museum. Though marketed internationally as "Dracula's Castle" and associated with Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, there is no evidence Stoker knew of the fortress, and it bears no resemblance to his fictional description. The castle's connection to Vlad the Impaler is tangential at best. Today it displays art and furniture collected by Queen Marie, accessible to visitors through self-guided or organized tours. An adjacent open-air museum showcases traditional Romanian peasant architecture and vernacular structures from the Bran region.
