Orava Castle rises dramatically from a high rocky spur above the Orava river in Oravský Podzámok, Slovakia, its origins tracing to 1241, when a wooden fortification was erected on the site following the Mongol invasion of Hungary. The castle's earliest masonry structures, built in the thirteenth century, employed Romanesque and Gothic styles, though successive waves of reconstruction—prompted by fires, sieges, and changes in ownership—transformed it into a patchwork of architectural periods. The Thurzo family, wealthy mining magnates who assumed control in the mid-sixteenth century, undertook extensive rebuilding that shaped much of its present appearance, a process completed around 1611. The castle's silhouette clings to the contours of its 520-metre promontory, its form finally stabilized as a Renaissance and Neo-Gothic structure. A devastating fire in 1800 ended its use as a residence, and though it later fell into disrepair, it eventually became a national monument of Slovakia. The castle gained international recognition as the filming location for scenes in the 1922 film *Nosferatu*, where it stood in for Count Orlok's Transylvanian lair.
