Building 40 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in northern Washington, D.C., is a Georgian Revival structure erected between 1922 and 1932 to house the Army Medical School. Originally designed to accommodate the school following its merger with Walter Reed General Hospital in 1923—when it operated under the name Medical Department Professional Service School—the building comprises four wings built in phases: the Craig Pavilion (1924), the Sternberg and Vedder Pavilions (1932), and the Siler Pavilion (1962). From 1953 to 1999, it served as headquarters for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Located at 14th and Dahlia Streets, the building exemplifies the Georgian architectural style favored for institutional complexes of its era.
