The American Radiator Building, located at 40 West 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan just south of Bryant Park, is an early Art Deco and Gothic skyscraper completed in 1924 by architects Raymond Hood and André Fouilhoux. The original 23-story, 338-foot tower features a striking facade of black brick with gold-colored decorations adorning its setbacks and pinnacles. Designed for the American Radiator Company, the building's lower five floors were originally exhibition showrooms while upper stories housed offices; a five-story annex was added to the west between 1936 and 1937. After changing ownership several times, the main structure reopened as the Bryant Park Hotel in 2001, while the annex served as the Katharine Gibbs School before becoming part of CUNY's Guttman Community College in 2012. The building is designated a New York City landmark and appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
