Designed by architect Tom Wright and completed in 1999, the Burj al-Arab is a luxury hotel in Dubai that ranks among the world's tallest, rising 321 metres above an artificial island 280 metres offshore from Jumeirah Beach. Developed and managed by Jumeirah, the structure employs high-tech and postmodern architectural language, its distinctive silhouette deliberately echoing the billowed sail of a traditional dhow. A private curving bridge connects the isolated hotel to the mainland, while a helipad positioned 210 metres above ground sits near its apex. Notably, approximately 39 per cent of the tower's total height comprises non-occupiable space, a design feature that contributes to its striking visual proportions and the sense of soaring height.
