Perched atop Buzludzha Peak near Shipka in central Bulgaria, this striking brutalist monument was inaugurated in 1981 to commemorate a gathering of Bulgarian socialists ninety years earlier. Built by the communist government from reinforced concrete, the structure commemorates the 1891 assembly led by Dimitar Blagoev, when early socialists met secretly in the area to establish an organized movement that ultimately led to the founding of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party—itself a precursor to the Bulgarian Communist Party.
