Perched on a plateau 450 metres above Shumen, Bulgaria, the Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria is a commanding brutalist structure erected in 1981 to mark thirteen centuries since the founding of the First Bulgarian Empire. Designed by Bulgarian sculptors Krum Damyanov and Ivan Slavov, the concrete monument rises 18 metres and employs bold Cubist forms characteristic of its era. Visitors can ascend a processional concrete stairway from the city below or approach by road; its striking silhouette is visible from up to 30 kilometres away, making it one of Bulgaria's most visually dominant monuments.
