The National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a monumental brutalist conference and cultural centre completed in 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. Designed by a team led by architect Alexander Barov working alongside Ivan Kanazirev, the building spans 123,000 square metres across eight floors and three underground levels. Its interior presents a unified aesthetic employing geometric motifs, dark colors, and extensive monumental murals, mosaics, sculptures, and woodcarvings by Bulgarian twentieth-century artists. The complex accommodates concerts, multilingual conferences, exhibitions, congresses, festivals, and performances, and was recognized in 2005 by the International Association of Congress Centres as the world's best congress centre. It now hosts major cultural events including the Sofia International Film Festival.
