Bulgaria's national theatre stands in central Sofia facing the City Garden, designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer and completed in 1907 in the Neoclassical style. The Ivan Vazov National Theatre is the country's oldest and most authoritative theatrical institution, distinguished by its well-equipped main stage accommodating 750 seats, supplemented by a 120-seat stage and a 70-seat venue on the fourth floor. The building has hosted productions under notable directors including Alexander Morfov, who has served as Chief Director since 1993. The theatre's architectural significance is underscored by its appearance on the obverse of the Bulgarian 50 levs banknote issued in 1999 and 2006, establishing it as one of Sofia's important landmarks.
