The National Theatre in Belgrade, a landmark of Serbian cultural life since its construction in 1868, stands on Republic Square at the corner of Vasina and Francuska Street in an eclectic architectural style designed by Aleksandar Bugarski. Its establishment, undertaken alongside the implementation of Emilijan Josimović's 1867 town plan, was instrumental in shaping the modern Republic Square. Having endured through successive phases of architectural and artistic evolution alongside the nation's own history, the theatre now houses three artistic ensembles—opera, ballet, and drama—under one roof. Recognized as a Monument of Culture of Great Importance in 1983 and designated a protected cultural heritage site by the Republic of Serbia, it became part of the European Route of Historic Theatres in 2014, joining a pan-European network of historic theatres spanning the late sixteenth through early twentieth centuries.
