The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia is a monumental Neo-Byzantine structure completed in 1882 by architect Alexander Pomerantsev, built primarily of brick and rising 53 meters high. Serving as the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria, it is one of the largest Christian church buildings by volume in the world, occupying 3,170 square metres and capable of holding 5,000 worshipers. Among the ten largest Eastern Orthodox church buildings, it was believed to be the largest finished Orthodox cathedral until the year 2000. The cathedral ranks among Sofia's most recognizable symbols and primary tourist attractions.
