The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was a Russian Orthodox cathedral designed by Leon Benois and built between 1894 and 1912 on Saxon Square in Warsaw, then part of the Russian Empire. Constructed of brick in the Russian Revival style, it rose 70 metres—making it Warsaw's tallest building upon completion. The structure stood for less than fifteen years; Polish authorities demolished it in the mid-1920s following Poland's independence, viewing the cathedral as a symbol of Russian imperial dominance and a deliberate affront to Polish national sentiment. Its destruction reflected the broader dismantling of Orthodox churches across Poland during this period of reclaimed sovereignty.
