Caerphilly Castle, in Caerphilly, South Wales, was begun in 1268 by Gilbert de Clare to secure his control of Glamorgan. It is the largest castle in Wales and the second-largest in the United Kingdom, set within around 30 acres of artificial lakes that historian Allen Brown called "the most elaborate water defences in all Britain." It is notable for introducing concentric defences to Britain and for its large gatehouses, and it is a National Monument of Wales.
