Carlisle Castle is a Norman stone keep fortress that has dominated the Cumbrian landscape for over nine centuries near the ruins of Hadrian's Wall. First built in 1092 during the reign of William II and substantially rebuilt in stone under Henry I in 1122, the castle became a crucial stronghold in the prolonged conflicts between England and Scotland, particularly during the Wars of Scottish Independence. It achieved further historical prominence as the last English fortress to be besieged, during the Jacobite Rising of 1745–1746. The castle served as regimental headquarters for the King's Own Royal Border Regiment until 2006 and for the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment until 2019, with a regimental museum now housed within its walls. Designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1996, it is today managed by English Heritage and remains open to the public.
