Carisbrooke Castle, a motte-and-bailey fortification built circa 1100, stands above Carisbrooke village on the Isle of Wight. The Grade I listed structure gained historical prominence as the place of imprisonment for King Charles I in the months before his trial. Today it functions as a local and independent museum, preserving both its medieval fabric and the dramatic events of its past.
