Leeds Castle, situated on islands in a lake formed by the River Len near Maidstone in Kent, England, has origins reaching back to 857, though the present structure dates mostly from the early 19th century. Built in Norman architectural style, the castle came into royal hands in the 13th century under King Edward I, who favored it as a residence, and later served Henry VIII as a dwelling for Catherine of Aragon in the 16th century. The Grade I listed building and its Grade II* listed park and garden were bequeathed to public trust by its last private owner, Olive, Lady Baillie, and have remained open to visitors since 1976.
