Carrickfergus Castle, a Norman stronghold built by John de Courcy in County Antrim on the northern shore of Belfast Lough, remains one of Northern Ireland's best-preserved medieval structures. Its strategic position—originally with three-quarters of its perimeter surrounded by water—made it a contested prize throughout its history, besieged in turn by Scottish, rebel Irish, English, and French forces. The castle served an important military function until 1928 and is now maintained by the Department for Communities as a historic monument.
