The Château de Pierrefonds stands in the commune of Pierrefonds in the Oise department of northern France, on the southeast edge of the forest of Compiègne, northeast of Paris. Built beginning in 1393 and designed in the Gothic architectural style by Raymond du Temple, the castle embodies the defensive military characteristics typical of medieval fortifications. Though the original structure dates to the late 14th century, the castle underwent a major restoration in the 19th century. Today it is classified as a historical monument.
