The Château de Vincennes is a former fortress and royal residence on the eastern edge of Paris, adjoining the Bois de Vincennes. Largely constructed between 1361 and 1369, it served as a preferred seat of French kings from the 14th to 16th centuries, rivaling the Palais de la Cité in importance. The château is distinguished by its monumental "donjon"—a fortified keep built in the 14th century that stands as Europe's tallest of its kind—and by the Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes, begun in 1379 but not completed until 1552, a masterwork of Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Its strong fortifications made it strategically valuable as a royal sanctuary during times of crisis, as well as a military headquarters and prison. Today, most of the structure is open to the public; the chapel was designated a historic monument in 1853 and the keep in 1913.
