The Château de Compiègne, a grand Baroque residence in the Oise department, was built for Louis XV and ranks among the three principal seats of royal government alongside Versailles and Fontainebleau. Designed by the celebrated architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel and completed in 1788, the château exemplifies the refined architectural tastes of the ancien régime. Following the Revolution, it was restored by Napoleon, who valued it as a symbol of imperial authority. Today classified as a historical monument, Compiègne functions as both an art museum and national museum, welcoming visitors to its galleries and preserving its legacy as a center of French royal and imperial power.
