Perched above the Loire Valley in Amboise, the Château d'Amboise is a fortified residence built in the International Gothic style. Confiscated by the French monarchy in the 15th century, it was transformed into a favoured royal residence and underwent extensive reconstruction. The château gained historical notoriety when King Charles VIII died there in 1498 following a head injury sustained on a door lintel. The complex fell into disrepair during the latter half of the 16th century, and most of its interior structures were demolished, though surviving buildings have since been restored alongside the castle's impressive outer defensive circuit of towers and walls. The site has been officially protected as a historical monument since 1840.
