The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, located in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, is a Byzantine Revival Catholic cathedral completed in 1914 by the architectural firm Barnett, Haynes & Barnett. Built to replace the earlier Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France along the Mississippi River, the cathedral began construction in 1907 and was dedicated on October 18, 1914, though its full consecration followed in 1926. Serving as the mother church of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and seat of the Archbishop, the cathedral is distinguished by its monumental mosaic installation—among the largest in the Western Hemisphere—and its burial crypts. Pope John Paul II designated it a basilica in 1997.
