The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., is the largest Catholic church building in North America and the tallest habitable building in the nation's capital. Designed by the architectural firm Maginnis & Walsh in Byzantine Revival style and constructed of brick, the basilica's origins trace to 1920, though the structure was completed in 1961. Dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, the principal patroness of the United States, it serves as the patronal church of American Catholicism. Pope John Paul II elevated it to minor basilica status in 1990. The shrine has hosted significant papal events, including Benedict XVI's bestowal of a Golden Rose in 2008 and Francis's canonization of Junípero Serra in 2015.
