Completed in 1939, the Central Post Office in Ottawa stands at the western edge of Confederation Square, designed by W.E. Noffke as a replacement for a Second Empire structure demolished to create the grand public space. The building merges the distinctly Canadian Chateauesque style with Art Deco elements, and is distinguished by decorative carved lions arranged around its base. Its construction required the demolition of the Royal Bank of Canada building. Today it houses offices for the Privy Council of Canada, with Canada Post occupying the main floor.
