Built in 1988 on Hokkaido in the resort village of Shimukappu, the Chapel on the Water is a minimalist wedding chapel designed by Tadao Ando. The structure exemplifies the architect's modernist approach through its serene composition facing a large reflecting pool, which becomes an integral part of the design experience. A monumental floor-to-ceiling window frames the water view in the Japanese architectural tradition of *shakkei*—the practice of incorporating distant landscapes into interior spaces—making the natural surroundings an active element of the chapel's spiritual and aesthetic presence.
