The Château de Chenonceau, spanning the river Cher near the village of Chenonceaux in Indre-et-Loire, is one of the Loire Valley's most celebrated châteaux. Built between 1514 and 1522 on the foundations of a former mill, the château was later extended across the river itself. The distinctive arched bridge spanning the Cher was constructed from 1556 to 1559 after designs by French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, while the elegant gallery adorning the bridge was added between 1570 and 1576 to designs by Jean Bullant. The estate's origins trace to at least the 11th century, though the present structure represents a Renaissance achievement of remarkable architectural ambition.
