Located on the right bank of the Loire in Nantes, the Château des ducs de Bretagne is a large castle founded in 1207 that served as the residence of the Dukes of Brittany from the 13th to 16th centuries, before becoming the Breton residence of the French Monarchy. Originally surrounded by ditches fed by the Loire, it functioned as the administrative centre of the historical province of Brittany until that province's separation in 1956. Classified as a historical monument since 1840, the castle today houses the Nantes History Museum.
