Chillon Castle is a medieval island fortress on Lake Geneva near Veytaux in the Swiss canton of Vaud, strategically positioned at the lake's eastern end between Montreux and Villeneuve, commanding the narrow passage to the Alpine Rhône valley. Built beginning in 1160 and designed by James of Saint George, the castle combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles in stone construction, rising 25 meters in height. Originally held by the House of Savoy, it passed to Bernese control in 1536 and remained under their rule until 1798, when it came under the canton of Vaud's administration. Today the castle functions as a museum and ranks among Europe's most visited medieval fortifications, recognized as a Swiss Cultural Property of National Significance.
