The Church of Mary, an ancient Byzantine cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Theotokos), stood in Ephesus near present-day Selçuk, Turkey, and was constructed around 401 CE. Also known as the Church of the Councils, it gained theological significance as the presumed venue for two pivotal early Christian councils—the Council of Ephesus and the Second Council of Ephesus—that shaped Christian doctrine. The structure occupied the south stoa of the Temple of Hadrian Olympios, positioning it adjacent to Ephesus's harbor. Today it survives as an archaeological site, offering material evidence of Byzantine architecture and the city's role as a major Christian center in antiquity.
