The Church of St. Mary of the Mongols, located in the Fener district of Istanbul, is an Eastern Orthodox church built in 1281 and designed in the Byzantine architectural style. Known in Turkish as the Kanlı Kilise (Bloody Church), it holds the distinction of being the only surviving Byzantine church of Constantinople that has continuously functioned as a Greek Orthodox place of worship. Among Byzantine churches in the city, only it and Hagia Irene escaped conversion into mosques—though Hagia Irene was later repurposed as an arsenal before becoming a museum and concert venue—making St. Mary of the Mongols uniquely significant as an unbroken site of Orthodox Christian worship since its construction.
