The Odalar Mosque in Istanbul was originally a Byzantine church of unknown dedication, later repurposed as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Mary of Constantinople in 1475, and finally converted into an Ottoman mosque in 1640. Named for the nearby barracks of married Janissaries established in the quarter during the eighteenth century, the structure exemplified the city's layered religious and architectural history. Destroyed by fire in 1919, the mosque subsequently fell into ruin; as of 2011, only fragmentary walls remained, obscured among modern urban development.
