The Kefeli Mosque in Istanbul is a Byzantine brick structure originally built as an Eastern Orthodox church, possibly dating to the 9th century as the Monastery of Manuel, though its exact dedication date remains unknown. Later jointly used by Roman Catholics and Armenians—the Catholic dedication being to Saint Nicholas—it was eventually converted into a mosque by the Ottomans and named after the Caffariotes, inhabitants of Caffa in Crimea. Its architectural significance lies in its repurposing of the early Christian basilica form during the late Byzantine period.
