The Church of Santa Maria Madalena in Olivenza is a Manueline temple commissioned by King Manuel I in the sixteenth century. Its construction was driven by Friar Henrique de Coimbra, Bishop of Ceuta, who celebrated the first mass in Brazil and is buried within the church. The building drew architectural inspiration from the Convent of Jesus and Elvas Cathedral, and subsequently became the seat of the Bishopric of Ceuta after Olivenza was incorporated into that bishopric's territory.
